At 14, Belva Jane is sent to a training school for delinquent girls and two years later is transferred to a mental institution. She is released on parole even though sterilization is required, marries a farmer and spends her retirement years caring for several small children until they are teenagers.
The huge price a young woman pays for her freedom is the central theme of this story, though minor themes of conflict, violence, injustice, self-improvement, perseverance, redemption also add depth to an already compelling plot. "The Triumph of Belva Jane" is a testament to human resiliency - becoming victorious, happy and contented despite experiencing abuse and mistreatment in the past.

About the Author
Del Hood is a Nebraskan farm boy who worked on farms but chose not to be a farmer. Instead, he got the bug to become a journalist by working at his town's weekly newspaper while in high school and during his college years worked for the Hastings Daily Tribune in Hastings, Neb. He is a graduate of Hastings College, the University of Nebraska School of Journalism and holds a master's degree in journalism from the University of Oregon. Hood's career spanned 40 years on three newspapers in Oregon and California. Hood and his wife, Sandy, have two daughters and a son-in-law who run the family business, The Yogurt Factory, in Temecula, Calif. They have two granddaughters and one grandson.
