His personal experience as an occasional victim of child abuse, and mainly as an observer of what happened to his sister, inspired journalist and author Del Hood to tell a story of hope and redemption. "The Triumph of Belva Jane" (published by Xlibris) shines a beacon of light to people who want to escape the consequences of abuse and become the best that they can be in life.

"The Triumph of Belva Jane" is an inspirational story of a young girl who is physically and psychologically abused by a housekeeper who becomes her stepmother. At 14, Belva Jane is sent to a training school for delinquent girls and two years later is transferred to a mental institution. She is released on parole even though sterilization is required, marries a farmer and spends her retirement years caring for several small children until they are teenagers.

The huge price a young woman pays for her freedom is the central theme of this story, though minor themes of conflict, violence, injustice, self-improvement, perseverance, redemption also add depth to an already compelling plot. "The Triumph of Belva Jane" is a testament to human resiliency - becoming victorious, happy and contented despite experiencing abuse and mistreatment in the past.
