The history of bootlegging has always peaked societal interest, especially in regard to moonshine - the illegal spirit rooted in rural Appalachia and notoriously known for its anti-government foundation. Competition between bootlegging families often sparked generations-long feuds that eventually defined the trade as a whole. In "The Moonshine Wars", author Daniel Micko explores these family dynamics through the eyes of Terry Lee Kincaid III, a young man deeply involved in his family's bootlegging business.

In his premiere novel, Micko explores the contentious relationships that developed as a result of competition within the moonshine trade in rural Georgia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Narrator Terry Lee Kincaid III also depicts the deeply ingrained racial tensions and prejudices that were blatant in the South during this period of American history.

"American history is definitely messy, but it made us who we are today," Micko said. "It is important for people to discuss the difficult times in history and learn how to better embrace different cultures."

Micko's biracial heritage and Southern upbringing led to a fascination with Southern history, and subsequently inspired his research and creation of "The Moonshine Wars." With a background in filmmaking and screenplay writing, Micko used his own life experiences to emphasize the complex nature of American families during this time in history.

"In the moonshine trade, family was everything," Micko said. "It was deeply complicated, but hugely sacred."
