Author Dane Spancake, a federal student loan counselor at Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, helps readers navigate the loan landscape with this guidebook. "Student Loan Forgiveness or Ten Years to Life?" (published by Archway Publishing) aims to raise the level of borrower awareness amongst borrowers beyond what one may gain through the Department of Education's 180 second preferred average call length.

The skyrocketing outstanding federal student loan debt ($1.3 trillion as of 2016 up from $500-plus billion outstanding as early as 2008), and college affordability in general, are two hot presidential election topics in this 2016 election cycle. In this book, Spancake uncovers the misconceptions about federal loan repayment as he presents the "truths" in a manner that is more visual and concise than the competition.

Through this book, readers will be able to evaluate the positives and negatives of repayment schedule choices; weigh the pros and cons of income-driven repayment options versus traditional options; and determine if they qualify for loan forgiveness. They will also learn how Congress sets the interest rates, how installment payments are calculated, and the benefits of consistent payments versus the consequences of postponed repayment.

An excerpt from the book:
Currently, there are only two programs that grant loan forgiveness without tax consequences. These are 100 percent forgiveness for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) or Teacher Loan Forgiveness (TLF) at 5,000 or 17, 500. It amazes me the low-level of awareness for either of these two programs.
