Mo Shuman was tired, and after decades on the force, he was ready to hang up his homicide detective's badge at last. Unfortunately, in this new book featured in Dog Ear Publishing reviews, he's tapped for one last case, a murder that will force him to confront the corruption of local politics as well as some of his own personal demons.

Shuman and his partner, Detective Dynaburski, are called to a crime scene where they discovered a young man strangled and dumped; the youth was Aaron Cohen, a yeshiva student and member of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. Shuman and Dynaburski are puzzled; who would have it in for a kid studying at a religious institution?

As the case progresses, Shuman finds himself reliving unpleasantness in his past, and it starts to affect his work as well as his life with his beloved wife, Graciela, and their daughter. Shuman's need to get to the bottom of the murder leads him down dangerous paths, and the people behind the cover-ups will stop at nothing to prevent Shuman from exposing their explosive secrets. Will Shuman make it to his retirement date intact, or will the secrets blow him apart for good?

"Murder at the Yeshiva" is a carefully paced novel with twists and turns that will keep even devoted mystery readers guessing how everything will wrap up in the end. Detective Mo Shuman is wonderfully three-dimensional, with the foibles and faults that make a character interesting.

Author Stewart Bird has written stories, plays and nonfiction, although this is his first novel. He has worked as a writer/producer for Fox and CBS.
