St. Louis Author Releases 'Murderers and Nerdy Girls Work Late'

The first book in the "Nerdy Girls" mystery series introduces Liz Howe, a Washington University Law School student who suffers from face blindness. She can't recognize her own face in the mirror, let alone anyone else's, so she pays attention to all of the other details that normal people miss. Need someone to guess an occupation by the movement of the hands? Need someone to recognize a person by smell? Need someone to figure out that those shoes were bought on clearance at Macy's last summer? Liz is your detective. When Liz finds a body in a stairwell, she calls on her extraordinary attention to detail to solve the case.

"I've faked my way through social situations for most of my life," said author Lisa Boero. "I had a lot of insecurity related to my condition, but instead of focusing on what I couldn't do, I decided to focus on what I could. I realized that someone like me, who must notice and remember details in order to recognize people, would make an excellent detective. The idea for 'Nerdy Girls' came out of that connection."

"Murderers and Nerdy Girls Work Late" doesn't just involve a mystery but also delves into the trials of dealing with face blindness. "I like to think of the book as Sherlock Holmes meets Bridget Jones. Liz's triumph in love and life is as much a part of the story as the mystery. I want other people to take heart from her struggles," Boero said.

Lisa Boero is a practicing attorney and Washington University alum (B.A. and J.D.) who hails from St. Louis, but currently lives in Marshfield, Wisconsin. "When I moved away from St. Louis, I really missed it. As odd as it sounds for a murder mystery, I set the book in St. Louis to celebrate all of the great things about the area," Boero said. "I have friends who want to go to St. Louis just because of what they have read in my book. The restaurants alone are worth the trip."

"Murderers and Nerdy Girls Work Late" was named a Quarterfinalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest this year. The second book in the series, "Bombers and Nerdy Girls Do Brunch," is anticipated to come out this winter.
