Authors Sandi Latimer and John Kady worked shoulder-to-shoulder for years at a news agency. In "Newsroom Buddies: A Working Friendship at United Press International" (published by iUniverse), Latimer and Kady share their experiences and show how news gets from the point of happening to the reader, viewer or listener. The authors also discuss their feelings regarding the downfall of UPI as they watched it plunge into bankruptcy and become a shadow of its once dominant spot among the national media. Kady passed away in August 2013 and Latimer is taking their story on a new campaign to promote the book.

"We tell the story of a company being purchased for a dollar, the moving of the headquarters, the deepening debt, the floating of loans to meet payroll, layoffs, bankruptcy, (purchased) by a Mexican who never learned to speak English, pay cuts," Latimer explains. "These incidences could happen to any company today. It is the story of how we got by and remained friends."

Latimer says while companies are being bought and sold daily, the media typically focus on the financial transactions with the personal side of buy-outs often left unreported. Latimer hopes her friendship with Kady will demonstrate the value of friendship and help readers turn their attention to the individuals who are affected by a company's change of hands.
