Famous for its architectural, organic, and cultural landmarks, Tokyo, Japan, is heralded as one of the modern and developed cities of this generation. Beyond the city's glamour, however, are stories that will make readers notice the "Small Corners in a Big City" (published by Xlibris). English professor, Nara native and long time resident of Tokyo Yoshimasa Ogawa gives an accurate account that will open reader's eyes to the realities that are hidden beyond the towers and skyscrapers.

Each story in this collection unveils a struggle with everyday problems in the big city. A bankrupt entrepreneur flees in the middle of the night, considers suicide, and then has a chance encounter with someone who provides a ray of hope. Members of a high-school judo club are tortured by the uncompromising regimen of the new coach, but a turn of events reveals the man's true character and qualities. A foreign student, successful as a long-distance runner, returns home and witnesses a phenomenal change that had taken place during his absence. A quiet young woman is dumped by her selfish fiancé-and ridiculed by her colleagues-so she takes revenge in a unique but clever way. A young employee at a prestigious company badmouths a homeless man living by the river but is then forced to confront his own biases. The problems and issues in these accounts give a multifaceted view of various sections and strata of Tokyo.

Due to the glamorous residential towers, state-of-the-art suspension bridges and the new Tokyo Tower, visitors might associate the beautiful skyline with a futuristic utopia. In reality, the "Small Corners in a Big City" are filled with people who are struggling to cope with real-life concerns and make ends meet. Vividly realistic, this is more than just an exposé of the real situation in big cities, this is a call for officials to make their move and address the issues that are shadowed by the bright lights of the city.
