Author Toko Loshe felt the need to share what life is like growing up in Africa. To do so, she pens a harrowing yet inspiring account of one woman's journey growing up during the apartheid years. Reflecting her own story through her protagonist, Loshe is able to vividly paint a portrait that showcases the different "Shades of Africa" (published by Xlibris AU).

The story is told mainly through a child, Shirley Schreiber's eyes as she grows up into a young woman. It is centered on her growing up in Africa during the apartheid years and through the violent disruption in Rhodesia as the country struggled for freedom and communism. The terrible impact that the Belgium Congo Revolution had over black and whites as it erupted and spilt over the borders into Northern Rhodesia, a country already in revolt with the cry of Kwacha, and the new dawn of freedom is also vividly pictured. Back dropped in such bleak years, Shirley and her family's journey is plagued by abuse and violence.

"This book should appeal to anyone interested in knowing how it was living a life of uncertainty in Africa," Loshe shares. "With constant friction and the history of Africa during those times, it shows why suppression of any race of individual is no longer acceptable."

"Shades of Africa" aptly depicts the many ups and downs of the continent and its people's fight for independence and equality. As seen through the eyes of a young woman, this insightful account lets shine the resilience of the African people and their right to earn and enjoy their hard-fought freedom.
