PERU, Vt.

S. Kramer knows that in order to ski at her absolute best in the toughest conditions, she had to change the way she prepares for the ski season. After experiencing chronic back pain that limited skiing performance, she realized that she had to work out differently. Taking sound training methods researched for a thesis in kinesiology on a year-round approach to alpine skiing fitness, she decided to share that information with other dedicated skiers through the publication of her book, "Be Fit to Ski" (published by Xlibris).

A three-part book that includes sections on exercise science relative to skiing, specific fitness areas for skiing called performance abilities and a section that provides 52 weeks' worth of exercise plans, this comprehensive book helps readers understand what specific fitness areas to train with respect to timing, frequency, volume and intensity of the training sessions.

"There is an abundance of free information about health and fitness available on the internet but to date, there is nothing that puts it all together, to address the needs of the ardent and athletic skier," Kramer says. "With the trend toward wearing fitness watches, it seems that nowadays, people are more conscientious about their daily health."

Skiing is such a complex sport that it is necessary to combine aspects of all training methods to best prepare athletes for the long ski season. With "Be Fit to Ski," it explains the how, what and why of training for skiing.
