Robert H. Nieder was introduced into the world of literature when he was in eighth grade and at the age of 13. He read John Steinbeck's "The Pearl" and got hooked by the flow of language on it. From there, he voraciously began a journey of reading more classic literature which inspired him to write his first novel "Sense of a Hummingbird," (published by Xlibris) a romantic tale sprinkled with elements or racism and a touch of the paranormal.

This story revolves around the characters of Billie Barrett, a young angry, hateful shrimper and Bridgette Kamau, a young Gullah woman. Billie's world comes crashing down upon him when, after a boating accident, he is washed ashore on a barrier island off the coast in the Gullah region on Hunting Island, South Carolina. After medical attention is given to him, he meets Bridgette, who tends to him on a day-to-day basis. From being a miserable, angry man, Billie had a change of heart and finds himself falling in love with Bridgette. A connection is made between the two, and their story of romance and hope comes to life.

"I think this story will appeal to readers because it incorporates basic tenets such as good vs. evil, a romance with a slight paranormal activity involve from one of its characters," says Nieder. "I believe it is relevant in today's world because it touches on the issue of racism and unfounded hate."

Nieder would like readers to enjoy reading "Sense of a Hummingbird" but more importantly, he hopes that they will also have a better understanding that changing one's mind or finding a middle ground and acceptance of a given situation is still possible.
