As she lay powerless in the front seat of her rapist's car, all Amber Mauldin could think of was her fate. Would he kill her when he was done? She couldn't know for sure. But one thing she knew for certain was that if he did try to kill her, she wouldn't let him escape the crime - she'd claw at his skin before giving up her life, leaving his DNA underneath her fingernails and leading police straight to him.

One in 6 American women has fallen victim to an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime, according to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network. Mauldin found herself part of this statistic when she was raped at age 15. In her new memoir "Perfectly Broken: A Memoir of Rape and Redemption" (published by WestBow Press), Mauldin recounts the painful moments of her sexual assault and the spiritually uplifting realizations she experienced thereafter.

Mauldin says her book "tackles the subject (of rape) head on with biblical truth" and shows how God assisted her in ways no one else could. She hopes her book will resonate with other women who question why God would allow them to be raped, as she once did.

"I asked God to show my why he allowed me to be raped," Mauldin says. "His answer changed my life forever."

An excerpt from "Perfectly Broken":

"'Tell me a little about yourself.' I grin and bite my lip. I know he's just being polite, but if I unloaded on him the horrors of the last two years of my life, I'd make the poor man cry. The things I could tell him. It's nice being the new girl. I hated all the looks I got back home. This man doesn't look at me with judgment or pity. I'm the new girl-not the damaged girl. I can totally work with that."
