NEW YORK

In the new book "Psychological Trauma: A Collection of Essays ranging from Domestic to Political Abuse" (published by AuthorHouse) Brian Trappler, M.D. - a noted psychiatrist and trauma expert - examines current trauma-related topics through the use of vignettes and didactic material.

The early chapters discuss trauma from the perspective of the shifting dynamic between what Trappler calls the "trauma triad." He explains that there are always three components involved in the psychology of abuse: the victim, the predator and the caretaker.

Trappler explains that, in its simplest form, the good caretaker is the "good mother" who nurtures through healthy bonding. He looks at the damaging effect "caretaker betrayal" has on victims, examining the role of "caretaker dereliction" as a frequent trauma precursor.

Subsequent chapters describe "terror-events," looking at the caretaker role in a more global way, to include the role of good governance and protective agencies in protecting populations who are vulnerable - like children.

"Psychological Trauma" also includes a healing section which approaches the principles of reconstructing the damage by providing trust and empathy - a return to the "good mother" example from earlier in the book.
