FONTANA, Calif.

Growing up, author Patricia Ann Taylor knew her enslaved ancestors arrived in the United States before the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, but she did not always know just how global her family truly was. Twenty-five years ago, Taylor set out on an epic quest to discover her roots, one that would lead her to Africa, Europe and the South.

Taylor's new book, "Arriving In America: Destination The South" (published by AuthorHouse), chronicles her genealogy journey as she returns to the land her ancestors once called home and explores the marks they left on American history.

The book maps the routes Taylor's ancestors took to come to the United States as well as Taylor's route to retrace their steps. Along the way, Taylor notes the great accomplishments of both European immigrants and enslaved Africans who laid the foundation for the United States and shaped it into what would become a thriving nation.

More than a travelogue, "Arriving in America" offers basic instructions for anyone looking to start their own genealogy research. Taylor details how she used federal, state and local records as well as Internet searches to trace her ancestors.

"The topic family history and genealogy has always been a subject of interest to people," Taylor writes, "however this type of research is not an easy task so many opt out. Hopefully this will motivate more to want to pursue this interest."
