STERLING, Va.

On March 23, 1991, Sierra Leone's Revolutionary United Front, led by Foday Sankoh, and former Liberian president Charles Taylor's National Patriotic Front of Liberia attempted to overthrow the government headed at that time by Joseph Momoh. The civil war resulting from this uprising lasted 11 years and left more than 50,000 dead.

In his new historical memoir "One Stone Revolution: The Untold Story" (published by Lulu), author Akibo Robinson provides a firsthand account of the Sierra Leone civil war, as he experienced it, in the late ?90s. To write his new book, Robinson drew details from personal diary entries he kept during the conflict and his family's eventual escape to Ghana.

"One Stone Revolution" describes the inhumane rebels' intransigence, the government's incompetence and the often untold suffering and resilience of the Sierra Leonean natives.

"It is a hard-hitting account of the events of the civil war," Robinson says. "It tells its story as it is, without embellishing the truth. It speaks of issues that Sierra Leoneans are loathe to discuss publicly."

He hopes his book shows readers the folly of government and the absence of progress in the development of African culture, as well as the impermanence of international assistance.
