Mike Effa is a noted author in his home country, particularly in the emerging scene of literary ethnofiction. His previous books, "The Prisoner of Afrika" and "The Man Without a Back Bone" are stand-out examples of this genre as is the book which he now brings to Copyhouse - "The Mysterious Liver."
"The Mysterious Liver" is a strong slice of ethnofiction - infused with the vibrancy of the emerging Nigerian fiction scene and delivered in the assured nuanced tones of one of that scene's primary voices. It boasts everything from human tragedy to sociological satire, and cloaks itself throughout in a visceral suspense / horror veneer but has much, much more to say than just splatterings of gore. It is a quirky masterpiece and a worthy introduction to one of the most dynamic emerging English-language literary markets in Africa.
Mike Effa was born in Cross River State, Nigeria. After a brief stint in the newspaper business he proceeded to the University of Calabar where he obtained a Bachelors Degree in Adult Education and Political Science before moving on to do his mandatory youth service in Kano with the Ado Bayero University.
He subsequently worked with Nigeria Conscience Media Ltd as Deputy Editor. and attended the National Open University of Nigeria where he obtained an M.Ed in Educational Administration and Planning. He is currently Assistant Chief Admin Officer with the Nigerian Natural Medicine Development Agency, Lagos. He lives in Lagos with his wife and son and is available for interview through prior arrangement with Copyhouse Press.
