"It was hot and humid that July day in1917, and the neighborhood odors were floating along on top of the muggy air.... Big Gino and his friend Franzini were walking to the bank to deposit the cash Big Gino had from yesterday's ice wagon routes. They stepped off the curb at the corner to cross the street.

"Bruno, the teamster driving the loaded beer wagon, was running late so he cracked the reins. He took the curve too fast and heard the barrels shifting in his wagon. He turned to look at them and didn't see Big Gino in the street.

"Big Gino saw the wagon and tried to step back but tripped over his loose shoe laces, fell backwards and smashed his head on the curb. In a few seconds the blood started oozing out of his cracked skull....

"Yup, Big Gino Mangiotti was dead for sure."

So begins "The Brooklyn Iceman," a colorful saga about Italian immigrants working hard to survive and succeed in Brooklyn, N.Y., from 1915 until the 1980's. The book uses the experiences of one man, Vincenzo Castella, to illustrate many of the important historical and cultural events of the era from the perspective of a pragmatic and determined individual.

During this period Castella's business interests become entwined with those of the local gangs of criminals, starting from the days of Prohibition, when his men delivered the liquor along with their regular ice deliveries.

Author Anthony DiPello grew up in a loving family of first and second generation Italian Americans, replete with all the traditions of that rich, colorful society.

His experience on the streets of Brooklyn as a boy and young man helped him depict the characters in this story as full and complete pictures, painted with all the hues and eccentricities he saw and heard and felt in his surroundings. He also incorporated 50 years of successful business experience in his observations of the business practices of the times and the significant events that took place throughout this era.

DiPello has been writing fiction for about 10 years, and his work has been published in various media. "The Brooklyn Iceman," available in print and electronically on Amazon.com, is his first novel.
