COWICHAN BAY, British Columbia

As a high school English teacher, author Susan Christensen enjoyed sharing her love of poetry with her students, but she noticed that the poets taught were predominately male. There were very few female poets, let alone Canadian female poets.

In an effort to fill this void, Christensen publishes her new collection of poetry, "Thoughts in the Dark" (published by AuthorHouse), offering her own views on history, politics, philosophy and the future of mankind.

Christensen's poems seek to interpret popular tourist attractions, nature and even shaky stock market exchanges using intelligent, keen observations. Each poem tackles a timely topic like the environment, women's issues and aging with honesty, wit and a touch of wry humour.

"Thoughts in the Dark" features 165 original poems and 110 full-color photographs and graphics created by Christensen herself. She hopes readers will gain a new perspective on life after reading her book.

An excerpt from the poem "Thoughts, Oblivious of their Destination," featured in "Thoughts in the Dark":

"Everything influences me.
Do I then influence the world like a ricochet bullet?
Living as a parent, as a teacher,
Do my spent thoughts bounce off the bystanders of my life
With enough oomph to make an imprint?"
