In the spirit of play and happiness comes Sammy The Pig, an endearing picture book about a pig named Sammy. Jenith Yvonne Lashley makes him an example of a pet who is comfortable in the household who enjoys all that domesticity brings. It is a learning tool as well, one that brings joy and challenge to the imagination of young children.

Sammy loves to do several things. He loves to play with humans, often pretending to fall on his head or even pretending that he is dead. He likes to dance and do the jig. He likes to root around among the daffodils planted beneath a windowsill. He roots there until he sneezes and sneezes and his nose becomes like a waterspout. He teaches children to appreciate the little things in life-especially those that make living more fun and meaningful. The child narrator in this book and Sammy himself show how they express their imaginations through relationships.

Sammy is a boon, a pet who captures the spirit of the innocence and play. Like an innocent child, Sammy brings joy and laughter to those who come in contact with him. He is the perfect foil to the child narrator's own sense of fun-together they show how nature and children relate to each other. It is an easy-going relationship that reminds readers that to be able to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, one must first become a child again.
