GREENPOINT, N.Y.

Over the course of his career, Chef Edward Nowakowski cooked for renowned dignitaries, such as Nikita Khrushchev and Al Gore, and guests of some of the finest hotels chains in the country, including the Four Seasons Hotel, but his beginnings were far from glamorous.

In his new memoir, "Brush with the Edge of Time and Profession" (published by Trafford Publishing), Nowakowski shares his family's history, beginning with his mother in 1942 and leading up to his own career as a successful chef in Europe and the United States.

Nowakowski's mother was born in Poland, but she and her father were taken by the Germans and forced to work on a farm in Linz-Austria. Nowakowski was later born into the happy yet poor family that nurtured his love for cooking. After graduating from hotel-restaurant school in Poland, he won many awards for his work before coming to the United States in search of greater opportunities.

Through his mother's stories and his own memories, Nowakowski recreates Nazi Germany and communist Poland, exploring daily life in these regimes and comparing them to his future life in the U.S. Nowakowski hopes his book will serve as a history lesson for interested readers.
