In her new memoir, "Once Upon a Time in New Iberia" (published by LifeRich Publishing), author Alice Voorhies dispenses a miscellany of guidance and reflection as she looks back on a life marked by moments of trial and joy.

Covering an emotional terrain that unfolds in New Iberia, New Orleans and Lafayette, Voorhies depicts colorful family members and friends, along with the beautiful banks of Bayou Teche, the historic halls of Mt. Carmel Academy, the muddy waters of Cypremort Point and the buzzing university campus in Lafayette. She also details the challenges and victories that accompanied her work with special-needs children in New Orleans.

Growing up in a big Catholic family in a small Southern town, Voorhies recounts a life that is as rich and vibrant as the world around her.

"The South, especially South Louisiana, offers a special kind of culture unlike any other in the world," remarks Voorhies. "People who grew up there - even when they leave - feel the pull of the South and fondly remember the bygone days of their youth there."
