Author and father of two Johnny Bates takes inspiration from his 6-year-old son's inquisitive nature and thirst for knowledge to tell a tale of exploration and self-discovery in his new illustrated children's book, "Little Big Fish" (published by Trafford Publishing).

"The term 'little fish in a big pond' is a classic cultural statement," Bates says. "I wanted to illustrate that just because we feel highly about ourselves doesn't mean others are inferior."

Accompanied by Bates' custom hand-drawn illustrations, "Little Big Fish" tells the story of Blue, a big fish living in a little pond. Blue sets off on an adventure to find out if he is the biggest fish of all, and winds up discovering a whole other world beyond his comfortable little pond.

An excerpt from "Little Big Fish":

"Blue and the whale become good friends. They swim together and tell each other stories. The whale explains to Blue how big the ocean is and how big the fish get. He tells Blue about rays and giant squid."
