New Book Helps Seniors Regain BALANCE
According to the August issue of the Harvard Health Letter, as reported online on Harvard Health Publications in August 2006, balance tends to erode with old age, but it is possible to regain equilibrium and compensate for permanent balance deficits. Army veteran Charles Press' balance problems were resolved to a great extent after seeing seasoned physical therapist Donald Blough professionally. Press, inspired to tell the world, asked Blough for assistance with the technical aspects for a book project and together they have successfully published BALANCE! A Handbook for Unsteady Seniors.
Balance is a motor skill that can improve with practice at any age. It is a physical skill that can be lost as well as restored regardless of age. BALANCE! is a practical book about everything one needs to know about balance, losing and regaining it, through the actual experience of Press and Blough. It informs readers as to the reasons for balance loss, the dangers of being balance challenged and an organized approach to restore mobile stability.
"...Safety is emphasized throughout the book both in activities of daily and nightly living and with the pursuit of a carefully planned course of action," the coauthors state. "This book is not to be read as you would a novel but rather as a reference book. Having an awareness of its contents may not only help the reader but also a friend, neighbor or relative..."
The book is presented from the perspectives of an unsteady senior who could personally relate with readers in similar situations and from a professional therapist with proven success in this field. However, aside from addressing issues of seniors and veterans with war-related injuries, this book will also benefit those who suffer from traumatic brain injuries from athletic endeavors which can lead to early dementia and balance problems.
Technical yet easily understandable, BALANCE! A Handbook for Unsteady Seniors is a practical handbook that will greatly benefit the Baby Boomers' generation. As these people are entering the senior age, this translates to more individuals with larger number of physical issues, making books such as this one quite indispensable to them.
