LITITZ, Penn.

A proverb says, "Closed doors can inspire us to courageously look for new opportunities." Hardly a stranger to closed doors, the author of the proverb, Marlene Hershey, is certainly one to seek new opportunities.

Hershey had long dreamed of becoming a nurse, but she lacked secondary level math and science credits. Not one to be daunted, she went back to high school-while her son was earning his education in the same building. In 1994, she became a registered nurse.

The same perseverance appeared when Hershey wanted to record an album.

Instead of turning to a traditional record label, she went to the bank for a personal loan to produce her first album. With the profits from record sales, she was able to pay her loan in full in just one month. She later hosted her own musical programs on both television and radio, sometimes including her daughters, the Hershey-ettes, with whom she also performed at social events.

Hershey's latest venture is the release of her first book, "God Steps," a collection of inspirational proverbs designed to uplift its readers. The adages were borne out of life experiences, psychological insight, faith in God and educational training. Some of the proverbs reflect on day-to-day wisdom gleaned from life itself, with a goal of enhancing one's daily journey.

After being invited to publish on LinkedIn, Hershey has posted several popular articles on the site. Senator Lloyd K. Smucker has recognized the author's works, noting that Hershey's musical and literary talents "left quite an impression."
