On December 15, Kirkus Reviews released their coveted "The Best Books of 2014" issue, and included in this year's list is celebrated Oregon author and mental health blogger Tanya J. Peterson's latest novel, My Life in a Nutshell.

Throughout her career, Peterson has been advocating for increased understanding of mental illness, and Nutshell is her second award-nominated novel to portray the complex lives of sufferers and their families.

Only days before the Kirkus announcement, My Life in a Nutshell was also named "One of 7 Books You Must Read in Your 30s" by renowned literary review IndieReader.

Previous literary accolades for Peterson's work include:

  • Recipient of the Kirkus Star, "Awarded to Books of Exceptional Merit" My Life in a Nutshell
  • Recommended by the US Review of Books, My Life in a Nutshell
  • Nominated for the Kirkus Prize, My Life in a Nutshell
  • National Indie Excellence Award Finalist, Leave of Absence
  • Nominated by Storytellers Campfire for its Voyager Marble Award, Losing Elizabeth
  • Honored with PsychCentral's "10 Best Anxiety Blogs of 2014" for her Anxiety-Schmanxiety blog

Peterson is a National Certified Counselor, columnist for HelathyPlace.com's Anxiety-Schmanxiety blog, member of the executive committee of the Board of Directors of her local NAMI affiliate, and mental health speaker. "Life in a Nutshell is a powerful and poignant novel. Written from a very clear and well-informed perspective, Peterson should be lauded for navigating the field of mental illness and presenting important relative issues in an affable fiction manner. It is a truly fine work that entertains, as well as informs." -The US Review of Books

"Few writers have been able to express so sensitively the variations of thought processes that assault patients who are suffering from degrees of mental illness. Peterson...opens doors of understanding so rarely provided for the general public." -Grady Harp, Literary Aficionado
