Although the Dalys booked a tropical vacation to relax and recharge, fate has other plans for the couple. This new memoir describes what happens after they tour the sadly neglected hospital that serves the area and its 20,000 inhabitants, as well as the "divine lightning bolt" that hits them on their way home. Its lack of medical supplies, personnel and event basic hygiene make their mission clear: Improve health care for the residents as best they can.
Helping villagers in a distant land isn't easy, and the volunteers battle everything from bureaucrats and desperate economic conditions to crocodile attacks, a reclusive billionaire and international intrigue. The power of perseverance, love, new friends and desire to help their fellow man eventually leads to 10 medical tours - and more than 10,000 patients treated, as well as the founding of the Marovo Medical Foundation. Author M. Allan Daly, a former natural resources education expert, has spent the past eight years helping people in the South Pacific. He has helped create change in the health care system of the Marovo Lagoon in the Solomon Islands and has coordinated a physician-based healthcare program for its residents. The amateur gourmet cook enjoys bird watching, hiking and gardening. Allan lives near Tucson.
