PALM COAST, Fla.

Life can truly change in an instant; every 90 seconds, a person in the U.S. is diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury.

After her son, Thaddeus, was hit by a car and suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2013, author Lydia Greear decided to chronicle her yearlong experience while caring for him in "Traumatic Brain Injury: A Caregiver's Journey."

By recording the day-to-day steps while managing care for Thaddeus, Greear hopes to bring awareness to the challenges of traumatic brain injuries to people who care for those diagnosed with them.

"Many family members separate themselves from their loved one who has suffered a traumatic brain injury," Greear said. "I wrote to encourage family members to have the courage to stay close and help their loved ones through the recovery."

Greear also reaches beyond emotional guidance for caregivers by detailing her experiences while trying to acquire medical coverage for Thaddeus through Social Security Disability, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.

Yet, through all the painstaking steps involved in paying for his medical care, Greear found solace in her faith.

"God is bigger than government programs and medical-assistance decision makers," she said. "I prayed we could find insurance coverage for Thaddeus to continue his care."
