SANTA FE, N.M.

With the rising cost of education, the value of a liberal arts degree is debated. Throwing his hat into the ring, author Christopher A. Ulloa Chaves joins the debate in favor of liberal arts programs. He provides his reasoning in his new book, "Liberal Arts and Sciences: Thinking Critically, Creatively, and Ethically" (published by Trafford Publishing).

The book makes the case for the importance of humanistic traits, occupational skills development and democratic citizenship as central goals of higher education. He makes the argument for the liberal arts model of higher learning, demonstrating its effectiveness in developing better thinking, reflection and problem solving in the world.

"The book is written for a general audience as a defense of the liberal arts model and how it complements professional education curricula at the undergraduate and graduate levels," Chaves says.

Chaves believes the education delivered through liberal arts schools leads to more effective occupational skills development and citizenship traits in society. He includes three chapters on the practical applications - namely critical, creative and ethical thinking competencies - resulting from this style of education in learners' personal and professional life. He hopes that his book will clarify further and promote the continuing merits of a liberal arts education.
