Peter Jyams' new suspense novel, " Leaving Houses" (published by Balboa Press AU), looks at the aftermath of war from two perspectives: the literal effects and the mental effects - from when wars are still played out in the minds of people, sometimes long after the battle fields have been tidied up.

Hamma Zylberfajn was only 6 when her beloved music teacher, Emil, died mysteriously - not long after the Russian revolution deposed the Soviet Empire. Her Papa Darius whisked her family away from Leipzig, Germany, without any explanation, forcing them to wander a war-torn Eastern Europe. Now 14, Hamma is determined to discover what happened to Emil, but the might of ex-Soviet forces may prevent her from finding the truth.

As Hamma confronts the puzzle that haunts her, she discovers "the puzzle behind the puzzle": why people behave as they do, who humanity is as a people and why they are what they are.

"I want readers to take away a hope," Jyams says. "That by understanding ourselves, in all that we do, we can change; to see that it is good to question our actions with their results."

With his book, Jyams addresses the long-term, devastating effects that wars, violence and aggression have in the unseen fields of the minds of people.

"Our society is besieged with people who carry violent ideals within them," Jyams says. "People are detached from their fellow humans. We do not see others as we do ourselves."
