Leaning on her education, professional experience and interviews she conducted with a group of single teenage mothers, Kateresea L. Ford, PhD, provides an inside look at the balancing act and life challenges of teenage mothers in her new book, "Negotiating Identities: Adolescent Mothers' Journey to Motherhood: A Research Study" (published by Balboa Press).

"After owning a residential group home for teen-mothers who were in foster care, I witnessed the trials and tribulations that the teen-mothers endured as they battled with trying to still be a teenager while the adults in their lives where constantly reminding them to 'act like an adult and be a good mother,'" Ford explains. "I empathized with them as they were confronted with their identity crisis while attempting to find themselves with the added responsibility of caring for a child and others not understanding what they experienced on a day to day basis."

With popular television shows such as MTV's "Teen Mom," the problems teenage mothers encounter have been brought to the forefront of social consciousness. Ford also takes a hard look at an issue that impacts our entire community. She hopes her book will help readers better understand the challenges teenage mothers face and "help enlighten professionals to recognize the level of care these young mothers need as well as recognize the elements which contribute to the outcome of their parenting."

An excerpt from "Negotiating Identities: Adolescent Mothers' Journey to Motherhood":
Bev explained her challenges of being a teen mother as frustrating. She struggled with grasping the concept that she had to be responsible and care for another human being. She became upset about putting herself in a giving position because she admitted that she was selfish.
