Bullying is a widespread problem. A joint study from Clemson University and Hazelden, an addiction treatment and recovery services company, reported in 2013 that one-fifth of all students were involved in bullying at school, either as the victim, aggressor or both. Victims often feel trapped in their situation, but Judith A. Terry wants readers to know they have the choice to stand up against their bully. Her new book, "Why Bully Me?" (published by AuthorHouse), offers a real message of support for bullying victims.

"Readers need to know that things don't have to stay the same," Terry explains. "They shouldn't be afraid to stand up and fight back. My book is different because it shows how to fight back against bullies."

Ana makes friends with Lucille and Gloria on the first day of eighth grade. Lucille warns Ana that Gloria is trouble and after a short period of time, Gloria starts bullying Ana. Gloria's bullying culminates in a standoff outside the school. Ana has to choose between standing up to Gloria or continuing to deal with Gloria's bullying. Luckily, Ana can count on Lucille to stand behind her, as true friends do.

"Why Bully Me?" offers Terry's advice on how to confront a bully, but also emphasizes the important role of true friends when one friend is bullied.

"I was bullied in school," Terry relates. "I want to share with others who are being bullied what I did to stop my bully."
