In "The Trained Killers" (published by Trafford Publishing), which has been selected for Trafford's Golden Seal program, author and Post-Korean War veteran Joseph N. Manfredo presents an eye-opening account of his time in the U.S. Army's research and development program during some of the most tense years of the Cold War.

Set in Fort Dix, N.J. just after the Korean War ends, "The Trained Killers" centers around Manfredo and a group of young engineers who have been drafted into the U.S. Army. After basic training, Manfredo and his friends are moved to a laboratory in Maryland.

The work, however, is more than just research on rockets and explosions. The military leaders believe Manfredo should be doing more soldierly duties and assign him and his friends to work in mess halls, guard prisons and march in parades, which they handle with pride and a touch of humor.

"The book is a series of vignettes of what army life was like for these gentle trained killers during this time period," writes Manfredo, "as they serve their twin Gods - science and the military - with dignity, wit and nerve."

"The Trained Killers" has been selected for inclusion in the Gold Seal program, which recognizes excellence in writing and overall potential.
