Born in 1923, Joseph Merrill was educated in the public schools of Alabama. Subsequently, Vanderbilt, Harvard, Britain's National Health Service, The National Institutes of Health and Baylor College of Medicine provided the stage from which he participated in 60 years of rapid scenic change.

In "As It Was ... But Not Now: A Memoir" (published by iUniverse), Merrill invites readers to share some of these adventures.

"As a privilege of old age, I wanted to tell how happily one can live while discovering oneself in the elusive Hippocratic jungle," Merrill explains.

Filled with humorous accounts from his youth, college, medical school days and career, Merrill offers a look at Southern subculture and medical education in a changing medical world.

By sharing his life story and essays, Merrill hopes readers will enjoy his highly-seasoned account.
