While he was serving in Vietnam, author Joel Russell decided there was little or no chance he would make it out of the country alive. He made a deal with God: let him survive Vietnam, and Russell would devote his life to him. In his 2000 book "The Book of Joel: Book II" (published by iUniverse) Russell fulfills that vow.

"I had what I call a burning bush experience," Russell says. "PTSD, bipolar or God just showing up at my bed in 1993, showing me of His Love and how He had his hand on me all my life. 'It was no mistake that my name was Joel. There will be a book and there will be a movie. Many will come to know me through the word of your testimony.'"

An excerpt from "The Book of Joel":

"I was just weeping before the Lord as He revealed His plan to me. He said, 'Joel, I've called you to be one of my prophets, one of my true prophets!' He said that I was not to go around to people to tell them what their future was, or whom they were going to marry, etc. I simply wasn't called to be that kind of a prophet. However, what I saw was a book that I was to write. After that, a movie would follow which would lead multitudes to Jesus through the word of my testimony."
