Machu Picchu is an ancient Inca site in Peru. Having never been discovered during the Spanish Conquest, it has fascinated researchers since its discovery in 1911. Author JoAnna Christine Daniels was likewise fascinated by this historic location. Its mysteries and the theories surrounding it inspired her latest novel, "The Gateway" (published by iUniverse).

Explorer Joseph Bennett vanishes from the ruins of Machu Picchu in 1920. He is never seen again. Seventy-two years later, his great-grandson, Christopher Giordano, determines to solve the mystery of his disappearance. Using Joseph's diary, Christopher finds the sacred altar and is hurled back 500 years to an Inca Empire on the brink of conquest. When he falls in love with Shama, an Inca priestess, he is a man torn between two worlds in two different centuries. His search for Joseph keeps him centered in his quest.

An excerpt from "The Gateway":

"He reached the ridge, breathing hard, and for a long while stood gazing out at the silent, age-old ruins. He could easily imagine discarnate whispers of the ancient Incas. The sun was just glinting off the surrounding mountain peaks, bathing the citadel in a soft, luminous glow as mist rose up from the Urubamba canyon and hung suspended above the city."

Daniels hopes that readers are drawn into this historical, romantic adventure series as she was drawn in by the beauty and mystery of Machu Picchu.

"Each moment seems romantic, and not simply because of the exotic backdrop of ruins and rainforest-the history and relationships are as poignant as they are powerful."
