A key strength of Frank's narrative is his refusal to his story to become gloomy. "I feel compassion for these two," he says. "Their plight is unenviable - they're destined to be together." Deftly sidestepping the tropes of genre, this darkly comic tale is witty and wise by turns, with colorful supporting characters and laugh-out-loud moments.
