Hassan A. Tetteh, a heart and lung transplant surgeon, has a pen as mighty as his scalpel. The doctor's debut novel, Gifts of the Heart, is inspired by his experience as a combat trauma surgeon in Afghanistan. He writes about main character, Kareem Afram, the Brooklyn-born child of West African immigrants, that grows up to be a surgeon. His skills are tapped when he joins the Navy and is deployed to care for severely injured Marines. Tetteh wrote the novel as a way to heal and inspire and help others recover from trauma and war.
