DALLAS

On April 29, 1966, Harrison Dwight Cavanagh gave his father-in-law a small record of their family tree for his 72nd birthday. With continued research over the next 47 years, the small pedigree has grown to encompass the history of nearly the complete descendants of Thomas Gantt (ca. 1634-1693) and his wife, Anna Fielder. That project makes up the two volumes of "Colonial Chesapeake Families British Origins and Descendants" (published by Xlibris).

The first volume of this two-part series traces the history of the descendants of Thomas Gantt, who arrived in southern Maryland from England in the mid-17th century. Using British and American source records spanning four centuries, the author documents the lives of this American Colonial family whose descendants include the author's father-in-law, Colonel Henry Perkins Gantt (1894-1983).

Based on medieval sources, volume 2, "Colonial Chesapeake Families British Origins and Descendants" explores the pedigrees of Gantt-related colonial families, including Brooke, Cabell-Horsley, Cavanagh, Greenfield, Lee-Faern, Parker, Stoddert, Weems and Williams along with 57 other antecedent British lineages.

"Colonial Chesapeake Families British Origins and Descendants" is more than a family heirloom; it serves as an informative example for those who are interested in researching and recording their own genealogies. The books will also appeal to genealogists, archivists and family historians interested in the settlement of southern Maryland and Virginia by British immigrants in the 17th century.
