Hampton Jeffreys debuts in the world of literature with the release of "Simpleton" (published by Archway Publishing). This new novel explores topical issues of bullying and the struggles of today's youth through the story of David Williams, a young man who struggles to chart his identity and destiny in a world that seemingly does not want him.

David is relentlessly bullied by his classmates, abused by his overbearing mother, who vacillates between smothery love and mental and physical cruelty and confused by his sporadic relationship with his spineless, insecure father. As David enters tenth grade, he develops a crush on Mitzi Williams, a beautiful fellow student who seemingly has no clue that he even exists. Things become even worse when Paul Emmett and Kelly Lowe constantly find increasingly devious ways to make David's life miserable at every turn. But when an unfortunate chain of events concludes on high school graduation day, David is left at a crossroads where he finally makes an important realization that changes everything.

Jeffreys is an evocative and compelling narrator who succeeds in giving voice to his characters' struggles and fears. He hopes that this novel will give readers courage to overcome whatever hurdles are keeping them from the life they want to live.

"I hope my book makes them realize that, even though things don't always work out the way we want them to, a way can still be found to move forward in life" Jeffreys says.

A deeply moving and unforgettable first novel, "Simpleton" is a bittersweet, sometimes comical, coming-of-age story of a young man who must rely on perseverance, inner strength and courage to escape a less-than-ideal fate.
