ENDERBY, British Columbia

Otto, a young man living with his family in a village situated a few miles from Piotrikow, Poland, is recruited into Tsar Nicholas II's army in 1908.

From there, events over which he has little control take him on a journey through St. Petersburg, Russia, to battles in Galicia and eventually to the windswept Saskatchewan prairies. In the 2013 novel "Cobbled Life" (published by Trafford Publishing) by HM Flath, Otto finds love, experiences adventure, encounters loneliness, undergoes tragedy and continues to hope for a better life.

"Cobbled Life" was selected last month for inclusion in the Trafford Gold Seal program, which recognizes excellence in writing and overall potential. It is a story of the many challenges and struggles Otto confronts as he adapts and adjusts to the ever-changing economic conditions, languages, ethnicities and cultural and social structures in which he becomes caught.

Flath compares Otto's fictional story to the thousands of real young men and their families who, during the social upheaval and turmoil of Eastern Europe in the early 1900s, found themselves pulling up their roots and transplanting them into the vast open prairies of Western Canada.
