In his 2010 novel "Masters of the Sea: The Adventures of Jules Verne's Mathias Sandorf" (published by iUniverse), which is getting a renewed marketing effort, author George J. Rios draws inspiration from Jules Verne's self-proclaimed greatest of 65 novels, his 1885 "Mathias Sandorf" and updates the tale for the 21st century.

"Masters of the Sea" follows Dr. Mathias Sandorf, an Austrian patriot, who was pitted against occupying German forces. He is betrayed, condemned and imprisoned. He escapes and is shipwrecked and marooned for 20 years on an uncharted island in the Atlantic Ocean.

Together with Chinese shaolin warriors, who fulfill Verne's prediction of communicating with sea creatures, Sandorf returns to Austria, where he receives a hero's welcome for the successful revolution he led. Unaware of who betrayed him 20 years earlier, these shadowy enemies mount a series of unsuccessful plots to kill him and retake Austria. Sandorf and his allies have other plans.

"Masters of the Sea" has already been recognized in competitions, including Honorable Mention 2011 Winner: New York Book Festival - "Science Fiction," and The International Latino Book Awards - "Best Young Adult Fiction."
