NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.

For more than 60 years, Vernona Kay Fath has been a valuable part of the fishing community in Newport Beach, where she has fished at both the Newport Pier and the Balboa Pier. At almost 80 years old, Fath is still learning and fishing, and she doesn't plan on putting down the rod anytime soon.

Throughout the years, Fath has kept track of the evolving etiquette of the fishing world and the patterns of various oceanic elements. Featuring a collection of unique experiences during her fishing career, as well as the perspectives and lessons of pier fishermen and tourists, Fath's memoir "A Local Pacific Piscatologist" brings to life both the everyday and odd moments today's fishermen encounter.

In addition to providing a look into the fishing world for both new and veteran fishermen, Fath highlights the importance of being involved in your interests, regardless of gender. Inspired by her mother to develop a passion for fishing, Fath has since passed on the love of fishing to her daughters, hoping to show that when it comes to serious hobbies and professions, a genuine interest and knowledge are key to success.

"My mother taught me how to fish, and it didn't matter that we were females in male's world," Fath said. "Just because fishing is considered a man's sport, that doesn't mean a woman can't be a part of it and be just as skilled."
