The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that young people need for success in college and careers. But how do parents get involved in the implementation of these standards as partners with teachers and other school personnel?

"Involving Parents in the Common Core State Standards: Through a Family School Partnership Program" written by author Fayette B. Nick, EdD provides practical strategies for involving parents in the Common Core State Standards through a family-school partnership program including positive research relating to the benefit of parental involvement, a Common Core State Standards implementation plan, and procedures for developing a Family-School Partnership Team for the purpose of Common Core State Standards implementation in a school or district setting.

Chapter 1 discusses and reviews current parent involvement research and its implications for schools and districts. In Chapter 2, a description of an effective family-school partnership program is shared for increasing parental involvement in the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. Chapter 3 provides a footprint of a parent-involvement plan for Common Core State Standards implementation. Chapter 4 describes a family-school partnership team and its development, and Chapter 5 ties it all together with the final words on the subject matter and suggests future research needed in this area.

"Involving Parents in the Common Core State Standards: Through a Family School Partnership Program" is an incisive and helpful guide for parents, students, teachers, and other school personnel. Nick believes that getting parents involved must go beyond parents assisting students with homework and parents supporting the school goals and objectives with little or no input. He added that the school personnel and the parent must form an enduring partnership.
