In post-Ferguson America the police are viewed by many as violent bullies or even assassins. Steve Fillerup's memoir "Heaven's Hammers" (published by Xlibris) shows a different side of law enforcement where the vulnerable are defended, and truth as well as justice are pursued relentlessly. Moreover, the theme of "Heaven's Hammers" asserts that cops do God's work on earth, which is a sharp contrast from contemporary media portrayals of law enforcement officers.

Readers will follow the remarkable journey of an understated but relentless criminal investigator whose career as an agent of the FBI is littered with twists and turns, tragedy and comedy. He describes his investigative work candidly, even cases that came up short and ended in failure. This memoir begins on the reservation of the White Mountain Apaches in eastern Arizona when a tribal police officer is laid to rest after being assaulted and murdered by two suspected burglars. The author, a rather sheltered son of religious parents, navigates a troubled world of darkness, sin and crime. While recounting his investigative battles, Fillerup also gives insight into the minds of perpetrators and the men and women who pursue them.

Fillerup's story is more than a rote recitation of exciting and sordid crime stories. Woven in narrative is a theme that asserts police officers work for God, whether they realize it or not. Hence, the title "Heaven's Hammers," which underscores the author's belief that police officers serve as godly tools, even if they are profane or irreligious. It is Fillerup's hope that readers come to understand that not only are police officers ordinary people, but their feelings, beliefs and personalities powerfully influence their performance on the job. Through the author's experiences, readers will gain a greater appreciation for what the law enforcement officers do to protect the public and preserve order in American society.
