Pioneering psychotherapist Niki Barr provides strategies for reducing stress and anxiety in cancer patients and their families, including an emotional wellness toolbox, in her new book, "Emotional Wellness: The Other Half of Treating Cancer."

"Nothing can generate fear, anxiety, depression or grief, and overwhelm the emotions more quickly than a cancer diagnosis," says psychotherapist expert Dr. Niki Barr, who developed her emotional wellness toolbox while working with cancer patients and their families.

"Advances in the treatment of cancer continue to mushroom, but concern about the emotional well-being of these patients has been largely ignored until recently. Now, both the medical community and the psychological community are in agreement: Healing is best served by tending to both the physical and emotional needs of patients."

In her book, Barr guides patients and their families through diagnosis, medical treatment and beyond to bigger life issues, coaching them on what to expect emotionally and healthy ways of coping. It's a manual filled with effective tools and skills that she has found successful in moving her own patients forward, inspiring emotional well-being throughout diagnosis, treatment and post treatment.

"If you are willing to embrace its ideas, 'Emotional Wellness: The Other Half of Treating Cancer' will give you wise and trusted counsel as you journey through cancer," says bestselling author Bernie Siegel, MD.

"The material for this book, including the emotional wellness toolbox, came from my work with cancer patients in all stages of cancer, diagnosed with all types of cancer," she says. "I had the opportunity to create a psychotherapy program for cancer patients to come in for an hour weekly session, exploring and developing strategies for coping with cancer."

Writes physician and surgeon Deanna J. Attai of the Center For Breast Care, Inc., in Burbank, Calif.:

"Maintaining emotional well-being during cancer treatment is just as important as deciding on the type of treatment to undergo, and Niki Barr has provided an invaluable resource for patients and their loved ones."

" 'Emotional Wellness The Other Half of Treating Cancer' is a powerful, cutting-edge roadmap for anyone who has received a diagnosis of cancer or knows someone who has," writes Lori Drew, the executive director of Moncrief Cancer Institute, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
