Author Elva Yolanda Quintanilla renders the life of a Mexican immigrant in the United States in her poignant new memoir, "Bajo Las Sombras Del Pasado: Do a Nadie" (published by Trafford Publishing), written in Spanish. The title translates to "Under the Shadows of the Past."

Quintanilla grew up in an emotionally abusive household in Mexico. Her parents neglected her and rarely showed her any kindness or love. When she grew up, the men she dated treated her poorly, believing her to be no better than a servant to them.

The injustice sparked a flame that burned over the years. Quintanilla finally fled to the United States with her six children where she began working in a field and later as a waitress. Through her hard work, she was able to earn an education for herself and provide for her children, instilling them with familial values.

"This is a book about a woman who was able to transform the bad into good," writes Quintanilla, "breaking the cycle in which she was born."

Through her book, Quintanilla aims to inspire others to rise up from inequality, pursue an education and make a better life for themselves.

"Be strong," Quintanilla relays to her readers. "Erase the word 'impossible.'"
