BOISE, Idaho, Nov. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ Whether you are twenty-one or eighty-one, you have undoubtedly experienced some kind of existential slump. A great deal of names exist for these rough patches in the human lifeline, each as limiting in their description as the next. In an attempt to address the complexity of human joy and provide a way for people to access it more intentionally in their lives, Elizabeth Popish has released Expanded Joy, which identifies seven key categories of optimal living and outlines a year's worth of weekly activities for increasing life's joy.

The Existential Crisis

Popish's sense of hollowness hadn't set in all at once. She had spent the last several years engaged in a wide variety of satisfying, stimulating endeavors (interior design, entrepreneurship, nonprofit board service, cross country skiing, etc). Nonetheless, she started noticing her sense of purpose slowly sagging.

The bookstore offered little solace. So used to reading her way through life's difficulties, this was the first time she could not find a book that adequately addressed the intricacies of her situation. In her introduction to Expanded Joy, she shares that was "simultaneously restless and lethargic, hypersensitive and unmotivated." With no one source of help, she made up her mind to create it on her own, to learn to feel and access joy regardless of her environment.

Expanded Joy is Born

Popish soon embarked on a quest to learn all she could about what created joy in people's lives. Seven categories emerged as essential for optimal living:

  • Energetic Health
  • Authentic Happiness
  • Mental Engagement
  • Stress Reduction
  • Social Connections
  • Creative Expression
  • Altruism

Rather than a simple understanding of these subjects, Popish wanted to create strategies that would ensure changes in her behavior. Without knowing it, Popish had laid the foundation for what would become Expanded Joy.

After three years of research and compilation, her project had proven effective in her own life and was ready to be shared with others. With the support of friends, Popish launched her first Expanded Joy class to a group of twenty-five women. She describes it as "one of the most gratifying experiences of my life." This positivity gave her the confidence to pursue publication.

As of November 10th, 2015, Popish's 52 week program, applicable for individuals as well as groups, is available for direct purchase or through any major online retailer.
