Dr. Kalyan's second law thriller novel in his Legal Thriller series has just been released for pre-order on Amazon Kindle. A legal adventure set in Bombay, the novel takes the reader through a gripping tale of film production, piracy and pillage. Unwittingly drawn into a violent war between producers and pirates, Arjun, a young, blind lawyer, goes on a wild pirate chase in Bombay, the city of dreams.

Film producers, record labels, and software companies have been grappling with copyright piracy for a very long time. Several research studies have concluded that losses from piracy to various creative industries are in billions of dollars. A recent study of he Indian Chamber of Commerce estimates losses from piracy in India to be more than a billion dollars. Many scholars have also established strong linkages between piracy, terrorism and organized crime.

In this backdrop, Dr. Kalyan's "Pirates of Bollywood," fictionalizes and dramaticizes the ongoing war between producers, pirates and police. Arjun, the protagonist from Dr. Kalyan's first work, Road Humps and Sidewalks, a drug patent thriller, gets drawn into a fierce war between producers and pirates, spurring him to unravel the pirate puzzle. The novel is the first of its kind in the legal fiction genre.

Talking about his second novel, Dr. Kalyan said, "Piracy is a way of life in India. Against the odds of stringent laws, and enforcement systems, the piracy business manages to survive and prosper. I have always wondered if there is much more in piracy than meets the eye. 'Pirates of Bollywood' gives wings to some of my wild conspiracy theories about the linkages between piracy, film production and organized crime."

Dr. Kalyan Kankanala is a leading Intellectual Property attorney in India, and manages the largest new age Intellectual Property (IP) Firm, BananaIP Counsels. He also consults for United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), and teaches at premier institutions such as National Law School and Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.
