The Massachusetts General Hospital, known as the MGH, was one of the most sought-after surgical training programs in the United States. In "To Fruit Street and Beyond: The Massachusetts General Hospital Surgical Residency" (published by Archway Publishing), author Dr. Fredric Jarrett shares his recollections from when he and his colleagues trained at this hospital.

"It was the end of an era, now long past, when general surgery was predominant and all-inclusive," explains Jarrett. "When I began my internship, general surgery included thoracic, cardiac, vascular, plastic, transplant, head and neck tumor surgery, and gynecology. Eight years later, when I finished my residency, additional specialty training had been established in most of these areas."

Jarrett offers insight into the lives of house staff and medical care at the hospital. He hopes his memoir will provide readers with a unique history that reveals the "quantum changes" that have occurred in the medical field since Jarrett trained at MGH.
