Dr. Dwight Benesh Donates Books to Toys for Tots to Help Improve Literacy

Dr. Dwight Benesh, owner of the Chandler Small Animal Clinic, has long been a supporter of literacy and activities which encourage reading. One activity he has recently adopted as a means of encouraging literacy is the USMC holiday program, Toys for Tots.

Long known for its humanitarian purpose to provide holiday gifts for underprivileged youth, an equally important goal for Toys for Tots is to provide books as part of its literacy program. Oftentimes, the books received will be the only books in that home. Benesh stated, "I have been running a business for thirty years and I can say with total reality that 'Yes, people need to read.'"

He continued, "I made the decision years ago that I was a very lucky person having been exposed to good books in my youth and that I would work the rest of my life to share that with others. I would work to provide good, clean books that are fun reading. I promised myself not to ever let go of that goal. So, year after year, I stay true to that objective."

The books he particularly prefers to give are Stories from the Golden Age, a line of adventure, mystery, science fiction, fantasy and western stories written by L. Ron Hubbard during the 1930s and 40s. Providing high interest books, loaded with action and which have a moralistic undertone-where it is important to do the right thing, is important he feels. Again in his own words, "I have sent books to the troops, I've sent books into schools, libraries and even the Boy Scouts here in America. I have even funded and saw to it that books were provided for reading test programs in Malaysia, China and the Middle East as Reading as Second Language materials. That is why the Toys for Tots Literacy Program is #1 on my list this year for Christmas."

Dr. Benesh relocated to Chandler, Arizona in 1986 when he purchased the Chandler Small Animal Clinic.
