During the 2015 IFLA World Library and Information Congress, the IFLA/Brill Open Access Award was awarded to this year's winner, the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB), to acknowledge their achievements to further the distribution of high quality open access books.

From 15 to 21 August 2015, the IFLA World Library and Information Congress was held in Cape Town (SA). It is the international flagship professional and trade event for the library and information services sector, bringing together over 3,500 participants from more than 120 countries.

On 18 August, the IFLA/Brill Open Access Award was awarded to Eelco Ferwerda from the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) (the Netherlands).

Eelco Ferwerda: "We are thrilled and honoured to receive the Brill/IFLA award for Open Access, after such distinguished previous award winners as Open Book Publishers and Knowledge Unlatched. If you believe, as we do, that Open Access will become the dominant model for scholarly publishing, it is clear that we need to find ways to make monographs part of this transition to Open Access. DOAB tries to contribute to this transition by recognising OA book publishers and improving the discovery of OA books. We are very happy that Brill and IFLA are supporting Open Access for monographs through this award, and we hope it will help to strengthen DOAB as a global discovery service for OA books."

DOAB, the Directory of Open Access Books, is the discovery service for Open Access books. DOAB provides a searchable index to peer-reviewed books published under an OA business model, with links to the full text at the publisher's website. DOAB is a service of the OAPEN Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to Open Access monographs.
